About Hurricane

Hurricane (locals say HURR-ih-kun) is the easternmost part of the St. George metro area, with 20,036 residents in 2020 and peach and pecan orchards that still hint at its farming roots. Those orchards exist because of the Hurricane Canal: organized in 1893, dug by hand and blasted through rock, it took nearly 11 years before Virgin River water first reached the Hurricane Bench in 1904 (Washington County Historical Society, The Hurricane Canal). Today Hurricane is also the gateway to Sand Hollow and a fast-growing bedroom community.

Water and sewer

Hurricane is served by the Washington County Water Conservancy District's Quail Creek plant and Sand Hollow wells, and the district also lists Cottam Wells serving Hurricane, LaVerkin and Toquerville and a Hurricane Valley water system it operates directly (Washington County Water Conservancy District, Water Quality). Your bill tells you which applies. Sewage is handled by the Ash Creek Special Service District, established in 1979 and governed by Hurricane, LaVerkin and Toquerville (Ash Creek Special Service District, About Us).

What comes up most

Older homes in town

Houses near the old town center may have galvanized pipe, older sewer laterals and additions plumbed over several decades. See repiping and sewer lines.

New subdivisions

Much of Hurricane's growth is recent, with PEX, tankless heaters and recirculation systems; new homes over 1,400 square feet must have recirculation under district standards (Washington County Water Conservancy District, Water Efficiency Standards (Oct. 2023)). Softener installs and recirculation tuning are common after move-in.

Hard water and water heaters

Scale shortens water heater and tankless life throughout the county. See water heaters and softeners.

Freezes

Hurricane sits a bit higher than St. George and can see colder winter nights. Hose bibs, backflow assemblies and pipes in garages are the usual casualties. See the freezing nights guide.

Tell us your neighborhood, roughly how old the house is and what is going on, and we'll call you back.
