First five minutes

  1. Stop the water. Close the valve at the fixture if there is one (under the sink, behind the toilet, on top of the water heater). If not, close the main shut-off for the house. In many St. George slab homes it is in the garage, near the water heater or the softener, or on the wall where the line enters the house.
  2. Kill power where water is spreading. If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel and you can reach the breaker safely, switch it off. Never stand in water to do it.
  3. Shut off the water heater if the main is closed for a long time: turn a gas heater to "pilot" or "off," or switch off an electric heater's breaker.
  4. Open a faucet at the lowest point to drain pressure from the lines.
  5. Move valuables and start drying. Photos now help with any insurance claim later.

If the main shut-off will not close, the meter box near the street usually has a valve, though it may need a meter key. For a broken water main or a problem on the city side in St. George, the city lists 435-627-4802 during business hours and its dispatch line, 435-627-4835, after hours (City of St. George Water Services, Collection and Distribution (FAQ)).

Common urgent problems in St. George

Failed supply lines and fittings

Braided supply lines to toilets, faucets, washers and ice makers can burst, and plastic fittings can crack. Heat and age in garages and attics make it more likely.

Water heater leaks

A tank leaking from the bottom will not get better. Close the cold-water valve on top, shut off the fuel or power, and connect a garden hose to the drain valve if you want to empty it. See water heaters.

Slab leaks

Water coming up through the floor or a sudden hot spot means a pressurized line under the slab. Close the main and see leak detection and slab leak repair.

Freeze breaks

St. George averages roughly 96 nights a year at or below freezing (Western Regional Climate Center, St. George Temperature Summary). Hose bibs, irrigation backflow assemblies and pipes in garages often split on the coldest nights, and the leak usually shows up when the pipe thaws. The Red Cross recommends keeping the water off and calling for help if you suspect a frozen or burst pipe (American Red Cross, Frozen Pipes). See the guide to protecting pipes on freezing nights.

Sewer backups

Stop running water in the house. Do not run the washer or dishwasher. Keep people and pets away from sewage, and see sewer line repair.

Overflowing toilets

Close the valve behind the toilet (turn clockwise). If there is no valve, lift the tank lid and raise the float to stop the fill.

When you send the form

Choose "Urgent problem (water running now)" and describe what is happening, whether the water is off, and anything you have already tried. We'll call you back to talk it through.

If you smell gas

Leave the house right away and call Enbridge Gas Utah or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and do not try to find the leak.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first in a plumbing emergency?

Stop the water at the fixture valve or the main shut-off, keep away from electrical hazards, then request help.

Where is the main shut-off in a St. George home?

Often in the garage near the water heater or softener, or where the line enters the house. There is also a valve at the meter box near the street.

Who do I call about a city water main break in St. George?

The city lists 435-627-4802 during business hours and 435-627-4835 after hours.

My hose bib split overnight. Can I wait?

Close the valve that feeds it, or the main if there is none, and it can usually wait for a repair. Check for water inside the wall behind it.

Should I turn off my water heater?

If the main shut-off will be closed for a while, yes: set a gas heater to "pilot" or "off," or switch off an electric heater's breaker.
