A town with a long history
Santa Clara is a small city just west of St. George, with 7,553 residents in the 2020 census. It was settled in 1854 by Jacob Hamblin and other missionaries of the Southern Indian Mission, years before St. George, and Swiss converts arrived in 1861 as part of the cotton mission and helped lay out the town site after the flood of 1862 destroyed the original fort (Historical Marker Database, The Settling of Santa Clara). The historic core along Santa Clara Drive still has pioneer homes and orchards, while newer neighborhoods climb the hills and benches around it.
Water and sewer
The Washington County Water Conservancy District's Quail Creek plant and Sand Hollow wells are among the wholesale sources serving Santa Clara (Washington County Water Conservancy District, Water Quality); your bill shows the city as your retail provider. Like St. George's, the water is hard. Sewage goes to the City of St. George's regional treatment plant (City of St. George, Wastewater Treatment).
What comes up most
Historic and older homes
Older houses on and near Santa Clara Drive may have galvanized supply pipe, older sewer laterals and additions plumbed in different decades. Low pressure at a few fixtures, rusty water and repeat drain clogs are common signs. See repiping and sewer lines.
Hillside homes and pressure
Homes on slopes can sit at very different pressures depending on their elevation in the water system. Banging pipes, running toilets and a dripping relief valve point to high pressure or a failing pressure-reducing valve. A gauge on a hose bib is a quick check.
Softeners and water heaters
The City of St. George's guidance, about 18 grains and no more than 22, is a reasonable starting point for softeners in neighboring towns that share the same district water (City of St. George Water Services, Collection and Distribution (FAQ)). Scale is the main reason water heaters and tankless units fail early here. See water softeners.
Slab leaks
Most newer homes are on slabs. A meter that moves with everything off is the first clue. See leak detection.

Santa Clara plumbing FAQs
Who treats Santa Clara's sewage?
The City of St. George's regional treatment plant, which also serves Ivins and Washington.
Is Santa Clara water hard?
Yes. It shares district water sources with St. George, which suggests softener settings of about 18 grains.
Why is my water pressure so high?
Homes lower in a pressure zone can see high pressure. A pressure-reducing valve keeps it in a safe range, and it should be tested if pressure climbs.
My older home has low pressure at some faucets. Why?
Galvanized pipe narrows with rust and scale over time. Repiping the affected lines usually fixes it.
