How to Find Your Water Shut-Off and Check for Leaks in a St. George Home
Short answer: in most St. George slab homes the house shut-off is in the garage, near the water heater or softener, or where the line enters the house. The meter is in a box near the street or driveway, and watching it with everything off is the quickest leak test.
Why it matters
A failed supply line can put out several gallons a minute, and a slab leak can run for weeks unnoticed. Knowing where your shut-off is, and how to read your meter, lets you stop a flood quickly and catch hidden leaks early.
Where to look for the house shut-off
Garage
The most common spot in St. George. Look near the water heater, the softener loop, or the wall facing the street where the line comes up from the ground. You may see two or three valves: the main, the softener bypass, and sometimes a pressure-reducing valve.
Outside wall
Some homes have the main where the line enters near a front hose bib, sometimes in a small box or behind a panel.
Utility closet
Townhomes and condos often have the valve in a closet near the water heater. Some buildings share one valve among several units; ask the association.
Older homes
Older houses may have a valve in a crawlspace, a basement or a utility room.
Types of valves
- Ball valve (lever handle): a quarter turn. When the lever is across the pipe, it is closed.
- Gate valve (round wheel): turn clockwise until it stops. Old gate valves can stick or break, so turn firmly but do not force them.
Tag the main with a bright tag and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
The meter box
The City of St. George says the meter is often near the property line or in the driveway (City of St. George Water Services, Collection and Distribution (FAQ)). It sits in a box with a lid. Watch for wasps, scorpions and spiders when you open it in the warm months. Most meters have a dial and a small low-flow indicator, often a triangle or star, that spins with even a small flow.
The meter leak test
- Turn off all water inside and outside, including the ice maker, washer, irrigation and softener (put it in bypass if it is regenerating).
- Watch the low-flow indicator for a few minutes. If it moves, water is flowing somewhere (City of St. George Water Services, Collection and Distribution (FAQ)).
- Close the house shut-off. If the meter stops, the leak is inside the house. If it keeps moving, the leak is between the meter and the house or in an irrigation line connected before the house valve.
- For slow leaks, write down the reading, use no water for an hour or two, and read it again.
Narrowing it down inside
- Toilets: the city suggests a few drops of food coloring in the tank and waiting 15 to 20 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means a leak, usually the flapper (City of St. George Water Services, Collection and Distribution (FAQ)).
- Water heater and softener: check the relief valve discharge pipe and the softener drain line for constant flow.
- Warm spots on the floor suggest a hot-water slab leak.
The EPA's Fix a Leak Week materials have more simple checks (EPA WaterSense, Fix a Leak Week). If you find a leak you cannot locate, see leak detection and slab leak repair.
